My affinity for high quality chocolate surfaced when I was around four years old – or so my mother says. Apparently, I ate a whole chocolate Easter bunny (in my defense, it was hollow) and then complained that it tasted “like wax.” Shortly after that, my mother gave me my first Belgian chocolate truffle and that’s when I learned: There’s waxy chocolate, there’s good chocolate … and then there’s incredible chocolate. To this day, I love incredible chocolate. And I love creating incredible chocolate buffets and platters!

Of course, my love for sweets was not confined to chocolate. I also had quite a love affair, early on, with anything that fell into the realm of dessert – cakes, pies, puddings, you name it, I made it (and then ate it). I was in the middle of making an English Trifle once and had to run back to the store to buy real whipped cream because my sister had come home with Reddi-Wip (fake whipped cream! In a can!) Needless to say, I was always very committed to using quality ingredients in all my delicious dessert creations … and I still am! [Continued]

I was also into cooking – big time – when I was growing up. I won’t bore you with my obsession with the Galloping Gourmet. Let me just put it this way: Nobody but nobody could whip out a five course dinner for four with next-to-nothing in the ‘fridge like I could. I was like McGuyver in that kitchen! These days, whenever I’m catering an event and have everything I could possibly need at my fingertips, I often think fondly of my early years in the kitchen and how they taught me the value of cooking from scratch!
